Near one of the houses, I saw an old man standing in the bog, calves sunk deep into the brackish water. His hair thin and grey, mottled skin. Shaking hands clasping at nothing. He was looking up at the car as we sped past. Only for a second, our eyes met, and a chill ran all the way down my body, and then he was far behind us. I asked Arthur to put the windows up. His eyes had been milky white, like the clouds on a foggy day. He had stared at me like he was dying.

Five close friends venture out on a hiking trip, all is going well until a thick fog descends and suddenly they cannot trust their senses, and what seems within grasp, fades away.

It had happened earlier in the day, his father had taken issue with him in some minor way and he'd been subjected to yet another barrage of abuse. Despite his age, his father yelling at him always seemed to revert Shouto back to childhood. Tears fell, his throat stung, and words would not come to his lips. It was as if he was five again, a little boy rendered vulnerable and helpless against a wall of fire.
