This entire thing is based off of one throw away line on page 143 of call of the crow where it says that Ellie screamed in pain without the mattica leaves. I don’t read too much into things, what are you talking about?!
When Ellie wakes up screaming at midnight, all Nox can do is poor the mattica down her throat and wish she had never followed him to the clouds.

Sometimes, it still doesn’t feel real.
Sometimes, Ellie wakes up in the middle of the night, hands shaking and eyes shadowed with memories of hundreds of gargols, pouring down on them or that moment on that island that shattered her leg, and it doesn’t feel real. Like it was all a dream, and she’ll wake back up in those sunflower fields and suffocating Sparrows that she didn’t realize how bad it was until she was free.
Sometimes, she stares at the golden patch she keeps on her bedside table, running her fingers over it, every little grove and rise, as if it’ll be snatched away from her and she has to remember it when she wakes up from this dream that’s too good to be true.
Sometimes, in the middle of the night, with too much nervous energy in her veins and the feeling that she’s not quite in her body lingering in her mind, she paces back and forth in her room and wonders what she, a little Sparrow from Linden, did to end up here.
