When Rumi gets the chance to make amends with her childhood best-friend-turned-rival, Zoey, she jumps at it with both hands. If the intimidating Lieutenant Mira Kang is part of that deal, well, Rumi can live with that. Especially when Kang's got a plan that Rumi thinks could turn this whole damn system on its head.
But as Rumi knows all too well, good things don't last. Zoey and Mira aren't out to change the world; they're out to save Rumi.
Rumi has no interest in being saved, if she can't bring her people with her. She'll die down here in the dirt before she leaves them behind.
Mira and Zoey won't stop fighting for her. Rumi can't bring herself to do the right thing, and step away. How far can she push it before it all goes up in flames and she loses them both, all over again? Can she even keep them alive, when a crueller eye than they understand turns its gaze upon them?
The game's about to start, take your places please. There's no such thing as winning, in the end.

After everything, the girls talk. It's messy (there's crying and anger and fear and love), and it ends with a promise: No more lies. It's only afterwards that Rumi thinks of her visit to Celine, and she very promptly decides NOT to share that particular experience with Mira and Zoey, content to let that little snippet of time die quietly in her memories alone (and really, what harm can one more lie be?). In the beginning it was for their university photography course, but every photo they managed to take of her was a blur. The voice was rich, leathery, and smooth, a controlled belt from the chest of the woman on stage. Mira imagined she could see the concentration in the woman’s closed eyes and furrowed brow, if the stage lights weren’t hitting her from behind, shrouding her in a golden silhouette.
Every bar was effortless. Every note an odyssey.
Mira looked at Zoey. The girl was just as transfixed. More so than Mira, even. But then, Zoey’s attunement to the Honmoon was much stronger than Mira’s. Zoey often said the Honmoon kind of felt like the Ocean from Moana. Mira had never seen it so she had to take Zoey’s word for it.
The Honmoon rippled.

She… she likes it.
The way they don’t seem to shy away from her, the way both of them seem to seek physical contact.
She doesn’t even think that anyone ever hugged her, before she met her team.
And now, she’s here, between her first and best friends – and Zoey keeps burying her head in Rumi’s shoulder, whenever she laughs too much; and Mira’s legs are pressed against her own, and the taller girl absentmindedly grabs her hand every now and then.She thinks she might like it - being held like this.

In which the Honmoon is more than just a shield protecting the world from demons - it is a net, is a connection, it binds souls together and never lets them go again. And it has chosen.
