Summary
In a world where killing dragons is everything, Varian is nothing. Maybe that’s why, when he has the opportunity to kill the most dangerous one of all, he hesitates. He lets it free. Unbeknownst to him, this hesitation changes everything, and the infuriatingly mysterious dragon rider who nearly kills him doesn’t make things any easier. Now on top of the crippling pressure to make his dad proud, Varian has to face the fact that everything he thought he knew about dragons was wrong. Especially when he somehow manages to befriend a dragon himself.

Oh, he thinks groggily. Ruddiger came back. He reaches under the blanket to pet his beloved friend and—
Varian’s eyes shoot open and he is suddenly very much awake.
That’s not fur. That’s skin.

“Hello to you too, Goggles.” Varian doesn’t slow as he marches towards Hugo. “Where’s the—“
Fire, he doesn’t get to say before Varian is standing close enough that the toes of their shoes are nearly touching.
“I need your help.”
Hugo has to bite his tongue to prevent himself from saying something embarrassing like “always” or “I would do anything for you”, and instead raises an eyebrow to show he’s listening.
Nothing could prepare him for the words “I need you to be my boyfriend” to come out of Varian’s mouth.

“It’s okay,” Varian murmurs. “I’ve got you. I’ll get you all fixed up, and you’ll be better in no time.”
The wolf looks up at him through eyes half-lidded with exhaustion. He blinks slowly, then his body goes limp. When Varian holds him closer to his chest, the wolf leans into his touch ever so slightly, as if he understands Varian’s words. As if he believes them. He blinks once, twice, before his eyelids flutter shut.
With an aching heart, Varian leans in close enough for his lips to brush the top of the pup’s head. He doesn’t say anything, but he doesn’t need to, for an oath spoken through silence is just as powerful as one spoken through words.
I’ll take care of you. I promise.
Or, Varian finds an injured wolf pup and decides to do everything in his power to make sure he lives.

Summary
It’s the holiday season, and Varian’s coming back to Corona for the first time in three years. It’s supposed to be a good thing, or so he tells himself. A chance to be with his dad, to reconnect with his childhood friends.
When he discovers Hugo is also home for the holidays, he doesn’t care. He doesn’t. So what if they were maybe a little bit in love when they were teenagers? So what if Hugo had unapologetically left Varian utterly heartbroken? It’s not like he’s still hung up on him.
Despite this unforeseen… challenge, Varian is determined to not let Hugo get to him in any way. But when he starts to realize that this isn’t the same boy who’d left him, and that maybe there’s something left between them… well, you know what they say.
Tis the damn season.

Ever since leaving Koto, tensions among the group had been high. Nuru and Hugo were at odds anytime they were within proximity to the other, which was all the time. Varian seemed a lot more nervous, reading and rereading his mom’s journal, flipping between two pages over and over. The animals seemed antsy too. Prometheus would stop and look around nervously. His ears flicked back and then would hurry forward before stopping again. He seemed especially stressed out when they would stop to eat or sleep. The donkey didn’t want to stop, moving forward until Varian or Yong tied his reins to a tree. Ruddiger would chitter to the steed and run up a tree, gone for a minute or two, and then return to tell the donkey what he saw. And Yong couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming.

After a long pause, he finally manages, “it will be, Goggles.”
Varian smiles softly and turns to Hugo. “And what if it is? What do I do then?”
Hugo, mouth dry and heart pounding the longer Varian looks at him with that soft gaze, has to force his tongue to form some sort of coherent response. “That’s the good part, I guess. You get to go find a new dream.”
