In every way it seemed… Felt like she was the squirrel in the wooden wolf mask.
Well, every way except her intelligence.
Rebecca knew that was the sole reason STARS had chosen her over any other applicants. In every other way she was a mere liability to the force, but in the terms of her intelligence it was likely she was unrivalled— even among the likes of her peers, her intellect seemed to be greater. Perhaps she would be unknowledgeable in a few fields the others would be experts in, but Rebecca knew her knowledge of biochemistry was unmatched for one for her age.
While she had something to help justify her being in STARS, Rebecca still felt a swallowing, unending need to prove herself, to show that bringing her on wasn’t a mistake, to prove that she could do well despite herself.
And this is how she would start.

She tossed again, throwing off the thin blanket draped over her before she balled it up and hugged it into her chest. She squirmed in her bed, pressing her back to the cool wall behind her and closing her eyes as she pressed the balled-up blanket to her face, and without even breathing it in, the scent of him entered her nose, her bloodstream and her soul.
Ciaran curled up against the blanket, its giant size more than accommodating for her body— of remarkably small size for one of her kind. And as she curled up, another kind of pang in her lower belly only further reminded her of how long she had been wrestling sleep. Ciaran breathed Artorias’ delicious smell in again— and paired with the pang of fullness in her bladder, that missing pang in her chest throbbed just a bit worse.
Perhaps she should have felt guilty taking Artorias’ blanket whilst he was out on one of his missions— especially with what was bound to ensue eventually. But she also knew that Artorias would hardly mind her missing him.
