And Leyley always needs him.
Maybe that’s why it starts—Leyley wants to be close, and so she gleefully skips past all of the lines in the sand that he draws, erasing them with her feet and pushing more and more. It makes sense. He’s all she really has, after all, and it was normal for siblings to push boundaries.
He’s just not great at enforcing them.
So, when she comes to him one day while he’s hunched over at his desk and trying to finish an essay (high school fucking sucked)—holding one of the books that’s he’s carefully kept hidden, one that he’s pilfered from the nearby library and forgotten to return—(a favorite of his, though despite the fairy tale-like name and inspiration it was definitely not for kids) he knows that he should snatch the book from her hands, tell her to leave his shit alone and they she had no business reading something like this. She’s smirking too, looking like a kitten that had eaten and disemboweled the canary.
He doesn’t do any of that, though. His heart thuds and his hands sweat as he sits rooted in place.
