Shane nodded pathetically, breathing heavily.
“And you are in heat, yes?” One curious hand trailed down, squeezing hard.

“Did we win the game? Why is Il— Rozanov here?” Shane croaks, confusion written plainly on his face. One of his arms is in a sling. He shifts and winces, his good hand hovering idly over his stomach, then pressing into his eyes. He’s aching all over, this sudden feeling of wrong, wrong, wrong engulfing his entire body.
“What happened?” he asks, more alert now, “Where am I?”
Hayden just looks at him, shock and heartbreak written all over his face.

“Shane, honey, is there someone there with you? Where’s Hayden?” Shane shook his head even though she couldn’t see him.
“No, I’m alone,” he said.
“You shouldn’t be,” Yuna said.
“I have to be, Mom,” he said harshly. “No one knows.” Sure, there was Hayden, but he was probably on the phone with Jackie, reading their kids a bedtime story like he did almost every night. Other than his best friend, no one knew, and no one ever could. Shane would have to grieve Ilya like this for the rest of his life. Privately. Secretly.
After the Centaurs’ plane seemingly vanishes into thin air, Shane knows that his life will never be the same. Not only that, but it will pause. He doesn’t have a future without Ilya. Still, time passes. With it comes more changes than Shane was expecting, one being in the form of a positive pregnancy test.
