Jayce blinks. "You want to share the bed?"
"Yes," Viktor says. "It is a simple fix, no?"
Jayce's attention leaps back to the mattress. It's not big enough for two people. Not comfortably. Viktor must know that. He's a genius, after all, and surely even he can do basic spatial calculations. They'd practically have to be on top of each other to fit.
"Yeah, but . . . it's—"
"I am tired, Jayce. The floor is cold. You are being ridiculous."
A storm, one bed, and a certain man lead to some questionable decisions on Jayce's part. He'd planned to stay on his side of the mattress—but the world is too complicated for that.

Summary
Jayce Talis is a kind person. Maddeningly, unreasonably, stupidly kind.
And so Viktor draws the fabric up to his knee and bares his malformed leg to Jayce's watchful stare. It's not a sight many have seen, and it isn't a pleasant one.
Still, Jayce's hands are warm.
Or: Viktor has always managed alone. Jayce refuses to let him.

Jayce tilted his head, crouching down to take a better look at the small model. Even with its rough edges and chipped facade, the unique ingenuity of it shone through. It still floated too, which was no small feat for someone that young to accomplish. “No kidding?” Jayce remarked. “That’s impressive. I already had my personal building projects that I tinkered around a bit when I was your age but I don’t think I could’ve built something like this.”
The kid’s grip on his cane loosened slightly, and though his shoulder still remained rigid, a small smile made its way onto his face. “It will take more time for me to refine the paddles,” he muttered.
“So you want it to move too? Maybe I could help you…” Jayce paused. “I don’t know your name now, do I?”
The boy hesitated, his gaze dropping to the ground for a moment, as though weighing the risks of sharing his name with a strange man who appeared out of nowhere. After a couple seconds of deliberation, he looked back up at Jayce. “It’s Viktor.”
Jayce meets a young Viktor.
