it took like 5 years for me to bookmark this after first reading it but that's bc it's presentation of worldbuilding and worldview has been living rent-free in my brain ever since. this fic is kind of a cornerstone of how I judge a story's perspective on its own worldbuilding

Her last report card marked her as having below-average biotic ability, and she’s clearly stable enough to be in school, so she’s not like Jack at that age. No offense.”
Jack slurped her drink. “None taken.”
Shepard frowned, staring at the smiling, freckle-faced image of a girl who was currently the target of a galaxy-wide shadow-manhunt.
“So why spend these kinds of resources,” she murmured, “on a girl who hasn’t done anything wrong?”

Summary
Nestled somewhere quiet in the Sierra Madre Line is a former penal colony named Grace, proudly in operation since the 4600s. Instead, they decided they would do nothing. Forever.
When Union rediscovers the world in 5016u and makes contact with the administration, the situation rapidly deteriorates into armed conflict. As the centuries-old system is torn down before the eyes of the people crushed beneath its weight, two women with a complicated relationship make a snap decision that changes their lives.
This is a story about repressed feelings, soul-searching, suppressed trauma, and recovery in the face of cultural shock and emotional growth. It's about queerness, belonging, burning passion, delicious friction, and inexperienced but very eager women trying to figure out what the hell they want. It's about unsupervised lesbians in mechs doing very irresponsible things.
