Summary
Life isn't very fun or bountiful when you're the last descendant of a long gone nation. It is way less fun with a 100 year war waging just outside the icy walls of the Northern Water Tribe - where no human is safe, much less an airbender.
So, from the moment Nerihn was born, her entire world was restricted within her home in the Tribe. As far as she and her mother were concerned, the boundaries of the world were the icy walls of the Tribe. As a result, Nerihn had never known anything beyond ice and snow and books - books that spoke of long lost beings like the Avatar and foreign concepts of freedom.
But Nerihn was only allowed to read about the world beyond the walls - never to see or to touch. It was so frustrating to know of something so beautiful, yet always just beyond her reach. It always felt like life was just beyond her reach. Even the aspects of it she should be able to control, like her bending, she was never allowed to reach for and to relish in.
She was to stay hidden, secret, contained. And her mother had been doing a wonderful job of doing just that. At least until the Avatar barged into the Northern Water Tribe and Nerihn finally saw the most dangerous thing of all - hope.
