一开始也只是一些小细节，一些很小的事物。那些用废弃衣物制成的绷带、小半瓶蒸馏水、针与线、以及更多的剪刀，在他们艰难穿越法国到达阿格诺的路途中，当Gene不可避免地失去它们时，偶尔会有一些这样的野战装备被回收，由士官们——通常是Grant 或者 Lip——像交付黄金一样珍重地交到Gene手里。起初，Gene并没有多想。他全身心地投入于确保全连一半的人不会染上肺炎或者累倒，但是当Lip一而再、再而三地把一小堆补给送来时，Gene起疑了。
Gene并不总是知道如何看待 E连的新指挥官。

"Shut up! I don't need you telling me what to do dad- uh, I mean, Bats!..."

Said goons watching the scene thinking, oh man, Batman is our boss's father.
"What are you staring at!?"
"Young man, drop the gun"
"Stop treating me like a kid!" His voice cracks while he yells this, noticeable despite the voice modulator.

Summary
“Bruce,” Dick said, staring into his eyes. They were both piercing and so very far away, as though he saw Dick but also could see something through him. Something far in the distance. “Bruce, let’s go home. Let’s go talk to Alfie. Okay?”
Bruce broke the eye contact to look down at the grave beneath their feet and Dick’s heart sank.
There was a moment of silence as Bruce rested a hand in the dirt, almost reverently. Dick felt sick.
“I can’t, chum.”
He couldn’t.

/|\Or, in which Bruce time travels to a time after Jason has died but before he’s crawled out of his grave. In his messed up state from the time travel he ends up guarding Jason’s grave obsessively to wait for his son to come back. This time he’ll protect him. He won’t fail again.
Meanwhile, his family misunderstands. And worries. Mostly they worry.
