The Separatists exploit a weakness in Queen Neeyutnee of Naboo to invade the planet.
Naboo was a cultural center, not a war-zone. Nobody was expecting a small, pacifist planet to be the next victim of the Separatist's constant shifting crosshairs. Dooku blamed it on vast rare mineral deposits underground, developed over thousands of years in swamps and lowlands, vital to almost every modern weapon. He claimed the 'Pacifist' Queen Neeyutnee was developing weapons in a vast complex under the capital, or near it. Whatever the reason, their forces struck first.

Summary
To become an immortal dragon is to lose oneself.
The Demon King has been defeated, but not without a terrible cost.
