Oli asian laita niin taikka näin, ei Lehto osannut enää jälkeenpäin selittää itselleen, miksi oli päätynyt vastaamaan vielä toiseen ja kolmanteenkin kirjeeseen. Ennen pitkää hänen Riitaojan kanssa käymästään kirjeenvaihdosta oli tullut tapa, eräänlainen tottumus tai rutiini, josta Lehto ei enää edes tahtonut luopua. Ajan myötä heidän kirjetoveruutensa oli muodostunut eräitä kirjoittamattomia sääntöjä. Lehtokin, joka ei ollut koskaan kirjoitellut kenenkään kanssa, oli hoksannut nopeasti, että oli asioita, joista oli parempi vaieta.

Steve Harrington knows exactly what to expect when he starts his third summer as a counsellor at Lover's Lake - screaming kids, tiny cabins, mediocre food, and smelling so strongly of sunscreen and campfire smoke that no amount of soap can get rid of it. It's his favourite part of the year, and he can't fucking wait.

Summary
Steve's parents never had any problem coming up with the ways he'd disappointed them. Whether it was his grades, his career, his social circle, his ambitions (or lack thereof), it was never good enough for them. It always came down to the same thing: when would he "quit fooling around and act like a man?"
Steve doesn't really think about his parents anymore, doesn't need to, not with the weird, wonderful, mismatched family he's found all on his own.
But he does sometimes wonder what they meant about being a man.
