Summary
Ilya's stepmother dies during Shane's second year in Ottawa. That's when the nightmares start. And in the nightmares, there's something heavy and tight sitting on his chest. Something cold, something he's felt before. In the nightmares, he's thirteen and shivering and willing himself to fall asleep, to teleport one day further away from everything. He’s thirteen and someone’s lips are wet and cold on the shell of his ear. He’s thirteen and he's completely frozen. Someone’s standing over him and he needs to move, needs to get away, needs to hit and kick and scream, but his pants are coming off and he can’t hit her, can’t kick her, and the scream is dead in his throat. His mother raised him to never hit a woman, and so in his nightmares he closes his eyes, grimaces at the light that seeps through anyways, and waits.

Summary
As a straight man, Ilya Rozanov has never had a gay roommate before, but it’s going pretty well. Shane Hollander is kind, silly, and an even bigger hockey nut than Ilya.
So when Shane starts bringing men over, and Ilya begins to want to bash their fucking heads in, Ilya comes to a startling conclusion: He must be homophobic.
(He’s jealous.)

Summary
The first sound Ilya hears is a thin, discordant symphony of beeps and whirs. Something vibrating.
The next thing he hears is…wet. A sort of shaking, gargling sound, that feels like the ugliest crying he’s ever heard. And through it, Shane’s voice.
“I’m with him now, mom. He’s— he’s not fine. He’s not. I know—”
Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask.
“Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—"
Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little.
-
Footage of the last game between Ottawa and Montreal is everywhere; it’s breached containment from the sports world, and now it seems like everyone is baying for Montreal’s blood. Except, Ilya is oblivious. Not exactly blissfully so, but as the fight for accountability within the league rages on without him, Ilya just wants someone, anyone, to tell him what happened.- Language:

Summary
“Shane, this is Anatoly Petrov and his husband—”
“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane blurts out before he can stop himself. Shane's shocked to see him now, a ghost plucked right out of his teenage years, his pre-MHL hockey days. He's even more shocked to see the modesty collar on Rozanov.
“Petrov,” the woman introducing them finishes weakly. “His husband, Ilya Petrov.”
__
Or: When Ilya is outed as an Omega, he's forcibly married off before he has the chance to break free and become an international hockey star. Years after the single game they played against one another, Shane and Ilya encounter each once again, and Shane helps Ilya escape the cage of his marriage.

Summary
“Grigori has never liked that Ilya plays hockey here," Svetlana says. "He has always wanted him to play back in Russia. When he hears about the Ottawa trade, he will be worse than before. You must not let Ilya do this, do you understand?”
“Would he?” Shane asks.
“Grigori is dangerous because he is persistent,” Svetlana says. “He wears people down. He makes them small. This is what he did to Ilya’s mama, and he now he does this to Ilya. Ilya can survive it because he is a world away. He will not survive it if Grigori is the only voice in his head all the time.”
--
Or: Grigori Rozanov never develops Alzheimer's. Even from across the globe, he maintains influence over Ilya, his career, and, unknowingly, his relationship.
Being told that they can't come out makes Shane speed-run being ready to do just that and tell the world that he loves Ilya Rozanov.
