When coming out to the Voyageurs leaves him wondering what his future in Montreal might look like, he lets himself be a little selfish, he lets himself wonder if there might be somewhere else he might be happy. "Ilya, honey?” Yuna sounded calm, composed, but there was a crack in her voice. A crack that he had never heard in it before. It chilled the blood in his veins, froze him to the spot. “Are you home?”
"Da. Why?” His free hand was tapping against the kitchen counter. 1,2,3 - repeat.
"Shane was in a car accident.”
"My Shane?” Ilya’s brain was spinning without grip, like tires during heavy rain. It did not make sense, in his thoughts–this was not real. She was lying. “No, he is a careful driver. He would not. I joke all the time. Even a grandma will take him over.”
The silence on the other end of the line thickened. It felt like it was eating him alive.
Late at night, after Shane left Ilya during the Christmas fight, Shane gets into a car accident.
While the world keeps turning and Ilya deals with the uncertainty of grief and guilt, Shane meets the one person Ilya no longer has: Irina.
