“The ‘no one will understand what I am about to say but know it only spells trouble for you’ look?” Thancred jokes as he hands Maisie plates to put everyone’s share of the food in.
She laughs even as she hits him lightly in the arm before grabbing the first plate, knowing that for all the grumbling Thancred made over Urianger that he only held the upmost respect for him. “Speak for yourself; I understand him quite well.”

Her eyes roamed the rest of Zenos’ room, pointedly ignoring him where he sat, noting how minimally furnished and unlived in it seemed to be. With how rarely as of late it was that she was even in her own room in the Rising Stones, Lusi was in no place to judge him for that, and to be honest she wasn’t—it was more how impersonalized it was. There was nothing here that showed off his personality, his likes, his interests.
Nothing but her, in his bed, wearing garments he had chosen.

Summary
In a realm fractured by the treacherous Silver Rail Road and the iron-fisted monopolies of the IPC, morality is a luxury few can afford. Stelle, a girl with no memory and a "Heart of Cinder" pulsing with terrifying heat beneath her skin, is sold at a grotesque auction to the repulsive Baron. In a damp alleyway, as the Baron attempts to claim his "investment" through visceral force, Stelle prepares to retreat into a permanent, doll-like status in silence to survive any trauma.
The shadows hold a different fate. With the crystalline flip of a gold coin, Aventurine of the Ten Stonehearts intervenes. Buying her for three times her price and threatening to liquidate the Baron’s very existence, Aventurine claims her contract as a masterstroke in a grander gamble. He views her as an asset, unaware she carries the very cataclysm he was sent to find. Meanwhile, Prince Dan Heng of the Scalegorge Domain tears through the countryside to reclaim the childhood friend he thought was lost to the flames. As the "Heart of Cinder" ignites within its new gilded cage, the IPC will learn that some assets are too volatile to be owned. With the answer dwelling inside Stelle, and nobody knows.

If he wasn’t allowed a choice, then Stelle wanted to be the right one. It was important to her because his situation was on her mind more often than she wanted to admit. His life had been so difficult that the cruelty of this being layered on top of it weighed on her.
I can’t change what he went through in the past, but I can be a better future for him, she decided.

Summary
Looking up from where she knelt, she spotted Dan Heng farther ahead of her, standing with his back to her and surrounded by a large group of yellow and orange flowers. He was writing something down yet again, but Stelle thought he looked ethereal amidst the backdrop, even as he was just doing something so mundane.
Stelle always thought he looked ethereal. The way he carried himself and the air he radiated was one of elegance, somehow further accentuated once she saw him in his true form. It was hard not to pay attention to a man such as him.
Slipping her phone out of her pocket once more, she angled it up towards Dan Heng and zoomed in slightly, taking a couple photos of him in the flower field. Maybe she’ll send him those images later.
