    He hadn’t even bothered to worry about this happening. Well, that was a lie. He’d worried about it, but he’d dismissed it as irrational. Tim was always moving, or always could move. Besides, it had been an aside mention on one website, and ‘missing spleen' didn’t even make honorable mentions in the ‘causes' list for the problem itself.

    But your spleen was supposed to filter your bloodstream. Take out things like old red blood cells and platelets. Platelets that helped blood to clot. Platelets that helped blood to clot a hell of a lot faster when you weren’t moving.

    Growing pains…

    It felt like more than just growing pains though; Timothy’s entire body was aching.

    As soon as the other boys had started shooting up in height, Timothy had combed through every single article he could find on what to expect when it would inevitably happen to him. Sure, he was a little younger than them and sure his family genetics indicated that he might never be the tallest amongst his peers, but Timothy had still known to expect discomfort.

    Discomfort, maybe some outright pain, according to some people who have had them before. But excruciating agony that left him trembling and sweating and nauseous?

    It had hit so suddenly, too. Timothy had fallen asleep for the night and all at once he was awake and he was in pain like nothing he had ever experienced in his life. Every muscle felt as though it had been torn apart, his head pounding like there was a disco going on just behind his eyes and it had even gotten so bad that he’d finally managed to convince himself to risk bothering his Dad.

    Tim’s spleen wasn't the only thing he had lost in the desert that night.

    The Widower left him with an injury that had forever altered his life, but Tim had adjusted. He was fine, great even. His only worry was how his family would react when he eventually found Bruce and went back to Gotham.

    But to his surprise (and relief), they never even mentioned it. They carried on as if everything was normal, and that's what Tim had wanted. At least, he thought it was.

    Until an incident in the field reveals a secret Tim didn't even know was a secret, and now he is forced to deal with all the emotional blowback he thought he had avoided.

    Or,

    Tim loses a leg in the desert. He really thought his family had noticed.

    One Last Time by

    “Oh, God,” Tim rasped, shaking his head wildly and closed his eyes when nausea attacked him.

    That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair. Tim had just found proof that Bruce was alive, and now he’s dying. He’s not going to save Bruce, everyone else thought he was gone and dead, so no one will go looking for the Bat.

    “Tim?” Bruce asked, reaching out to him and Tim bit back a wail.

    Or: after taking a blow to the head, Tim wakes up with amnesia. He's pretty sure the universe has it out for him, making him hallucinate his family while he's dying.
