The Resurrection Plant, also known as False Rose of Jericho, is a plant that has adapted to survive conditions of prolonged drought in its natural environment through an interesting physiological strategy: it allows its tissues to dry out through dehydration, and during this process it induces physiological mechanisms of resistance to very low humidity percentages—up to 5%. When the humidity of the soil and air rises again, even after a long time after it withered, this plant is able to rehydrate and perfectly recover its photosynthetic and growth capabilities.

Every day he’d walk this way to make sure everything was as it should be. Every day, everything was the same. It was good. By now Nicholas knew he’d take the boring nothing of the day over the consequences of the change. ‘Out of the ordinary’ almost never meant ‘good’.
And his role was to walk the fields, make sure everything was alright, everything was the same and nothing new and unexpected occurred like… a flash of yellow in slowly swaying grains.
Nicholas whipped his head around to where he had seen the movement and tracked the area for anything unusual. There it was. He found it immediately. He found them immediately.
“Hey!” He called out.
The yellow flash didn’t stop and Nicholas swore, giving chase.

His flesh hand drifted over to his left rib cage, tracing over mottled flesh where a soulmark used to be. The area was so marred by scars that the feather-like mark wouldn’t be recognizable even if it were still there. But that mark had faded long ago. What were a few scars over an empty patch of skin?

Vash wasn’t aware he was staring until the priest looked at him and smirked. “Am I that nice to look at, Blondie?”
“Oh, um sorry! I didn’t mean to be rude!” Vash felt his face reddening. “I just thought it was awfully kind of you to spare a prayer for those bandits. Most people never try to talk things out these days.”
“And is that what you were doing?” The priest kicked off of the wall, leaning towards him. “Trying to talk things out with lawless criminals?”
Vash smiled awkwardly. “Yeah… I just thought I’d give them the chance to make things right, you know?”
“Then perhaps it’s fate that we ran into each other,” the priest chuckled. Vash was all too aware of the way his chest shook as he did (why was his shirt unbuttoned so far down? His memories trickle in, he tries to remember what he was last doing. There was Hopeland, and there was red. A lot of red.
Vash.
There’s an uncomfortable feeling in his chest at the name, the face. Spikey, Needle-noggin, Blondie, all his stupid nicknames for one very familiar face.
He died, the knowledge doesn’t feel as scary as it should be. Just strange, like the first time he saw Vash talk to a plant. Like something beyond his comprehension was placed right in his lap.
Wolfwood wakes up almost twenty years after his death. Things have changed, the world is a kinder place than he left it. There's only one thing missing.
