Francesca had rehearsed the question in her mind a dozen times, yet it still felt clumsy when she spoke it aloud.
"What would it signify, do you think, if a woman were to have... dreams of an intimate nature about another woman? A friend, perhaps. Someone she has known for some time and regards with great affection. Would that indicate anything particular, or is it merely the mind playing tricks in the quiet hours?"
Violet set her embroidery aside, her gaze sharpening with immediate interest. She studied Francesca for a moment before speaking, her tone gentle but direct. "I confess I am not entirely surprised by the question. Tell me, my dear, does this concern Michaela?"

Summary
Almost three years after the death of her husband, Francesca is officially out of her mourning period and ready for the next phase of her life.
However, despite the urging of her mother, she is in no hurry to return to Mayfair. Instead, she wishes to remain in Scotland with her dear friend Michaela, the newly minted Countess of Kilmartin, and run the estate together, as John would have wished.

Francesca had long thought of confronting Michaela about it. She had imagined countless scenarios of the fight that would make her scream louder than she had ever allowed her voice to go.
They all contained explosive fights, venomous words, and undying bitterness. A fire she had fed with ire and resentment, at last unleashed.
They were nothing like what she had enabled just now. Her nose was red, and cold. Her boots were wet. Her heart burned with the desire to understand. For a resolution. To be good enough to know Michaela, to be worthy enough to speak the language of her perfectly guarded heart, and even more impassable mind.
