Katniss turned back to her family when her mother's hands fell away. “I'm ready, little duck.”
“Okay.” Prim raised the borrowed camera.
Though Katniss stared beyond the lens, at the soft curve of her sister's cheek. She willed herself to allow the sight to melt her a little bit, at least until her edges weren't so sharp, capable of causing so much pain to the people surrounding her—a click, a flash, a blink of her stinging eyes, and she began the long wait for her life to change.

A catastrophic environmental event out of District 13 has darkened the skies—and such events in this world have always harmed women and children first. Faced with a population crisis, Panem turns to the women of District 12, who have survival and fertility rates far exceeding the average of all of the other districts—which only feeds into the perception and punishment that District 12's coal mines were the true cause of the atmosphere's ruin. Katniss is resistant to signing up for these "marriage boards" of richer men seeking to take advantage of poorer women, until Prim's declining health forces her hand in hopes of a future for her little sister.

Summary
Gendry gets one bad break after another when his master sells him to the Night's Watch. But along the way to the Wall, he meets a young girl named Arya disguised as a boy. Somehow, they manage to stick together as everything crumbles around them. Arya turns out to be more dangerous than he thought possible for someone that size. Gendry finds himself growing more and more attached to Arya, but she's a Lady and he's just a lowborn with no powers to speak of. Or so he thinks.

She knows it's stupid, to pretend that she does not know him.
“Peeta Mellark,” says Madge. Glum. “He's the baker's son.”

Peeta turns to look at me, a question in his eyes.
He does not know how we will do this. He does not realize that there is a chance both of us can make it. I know before he even speaks, that he will be working to save me. That he is prepared to give his life. That he has resigned himself to the task of dying. I am angry at him already. I remember his lifeless body on that Capitol street.
He will not do that to me again. Ever.
Before I can escape, Peeta tightens his hand around mine, not letting me go.
“How did you know?” he asks me, his eyes still red from the tears.
“What do you mean?” I ask, taken off guard.
“How did you know we were going to be reaped?”
