    Summary

When you put down your quill, you remain the same opinionated, intelligent, determined person who writes me these letters. You don’t hide yourself; the world has hidden you.

As for me—I set mine down and pick up a mask, and I wear it until I can’t remember how to take it off.

Do I hate what I’ve become? Maybe. Does that matter? Will that absolve me?

Am I fooling myself or you?

    -Your enemy, I think

    Summary

Li Lun opens his eyes, hair billowing around him in a gust of wind as leaves fall in a shower to the ground, human form regained. Standing in front of him, waiting with a calm smile, is Zhao Yuanzhou. He looks just the same as always; just as open, just as relaxed.

“There you are,” Zhao Yuanzhou says easily, eyes crinkling in a smile without any hint of judgment or malice. It makes Li Lun’s heart twist in his chest; his newly formed lungs catch. “I need your help,” he says, melodic voice quiet and unbothered. Li Lun stares. What would he come to Li Lun for, after everything?

Zhao Yuanzhou looks at him with a slow smile; raises his arm to rub his fingers against his sleeve. One of the motions he uses when he’s thinking. Li Lun gestures at him, not speaking, to encourage him.

“I can’t seem to remember anything,” Zhao Yuanzhou admits calmly- and all the possibilities rain down on Li Lun like hammer blows.

    Summary

Jiang Cheng did not give a lot of thought to his death anymore, far too busy worrying about sect problems and nephew problems and dead brothers coming back to life problems.

He was absolutely sure of one thing however— it would be his hatred that would kill him in the end.

And thus, the absolute fucking irony that here he was, choking to death on his love, was un-fucking-believable and typical, really, of the shit-show that had been his life.

Of course, not even death was going to be easy for him.

    Summary

There is a version of this story where Jiang Cheng lets Wei Wuxian die, where he nods at the council meeting, pledges his disciples, and watches the Burial Mounds burn from a safe distance.

    This is not that version.

This is the version where Yanli survives, weaving conspiracies between lullabies, where furious Jiang Cheng drags Wei Wuxian from the Burial Mounds by the collar, where they break a Wen prisoner out of Koi Tower, and where treason is committed to save those drowning in darkness.

Family is not about deserving; it is about showing up when everyone else has left. And the Jin are about to find out what happens when you corner the wrong siblings.

    Summary

Beside the vase is a porcelain plate, and resting upon that plate is a silver woman’s hairpin. That makes Wei Wuxian raise an eyebrow. He picks it up and turns it over in his hands; it is not Madam Yu’s, he knows, and it doesn’t look like something of Jiang Yanli’s, either. A faint melancholy pulses through him at the thought, and he brushes it away. He cannot say why, but he is certain the pin is familiar, and his brows furrow for a moment as he thinks before his eyes fly wide open as it dawns on him. He has seen this before, on the back of a retreating figure muttering about how reckless he is, in the twist of a ponytail thrown up in seconds so she wouldn’t get blood in her hair as she worked.

That raises the obvious question: what in the world is Wen Qing’s hairpin doing in Jiang Cheng’s room?
