Joel had always believed in names.

When her feelings come into focus, Joel is caught between desire and restraint, truth and lies. The ghost of Salt Lake threatens to tip everything into ruin, forcing Joel to choose: walk away, or fight for something new.

“You take care of me—”
“Ellie—” He breathes out, grunting, heavy. I can’t take care of you. “How many close calls’ve we had?”
She blinks at him, confused, still flushed from tears. “W-we did fine. We— you and me, we— we did it together. We—”
Christ, he thinks, got some fantasy in her head, teamwork like one of her comics, supergroup of two saving the world, huh?
“And now you’ll do better n’ fine with Tommy. Alright? You’ll do better than fine with him.”
“I don’t want Tommy, Joel! I want—” she pushes up and cuts off, mouth tightening, something unsure and scared flickering across her face. Standing in front of him, between the bed and his knees. He sits straighter. She blinks and sinks back onto the bed, perching against it, fingers curling in wrinkled sheets. “You’re the only one who’s never left me.”
“I know…” she squeezes her eyes shut, fingers curling into the drape of her jacket sleeves over her hands. “I know you think I’ll be safer with Tommy, but I’ll just be more scared. I’ll just be more scared without you.”

She could hear the rustling of his sleeping bag, less than five feet away from her, and without seeing him, she could tell he was sitting up now.
“Bad dreams?”
“Yep.” She fought hard to keep any annoyance out of her tone.
“‘Bout what?” Joel asked her, uncharacteristically caring.
Of fucking course he’d choose now of all times to engage in conversation.
Ellie sighed. “Oh my god,” she muttered, barely audible. “It’s fine, Joel.”
There was a pause that felt entirely too long, more rustling beside her, and a clearing of the throat, followed by a little, “sorry.”
