“Hermione?”
She met his eyes.
“Do you want the kiss to not change anything?” The firelight threw a soft gold across his freckled skin, glinting off his ruffled hair and under the gentle curve of his jaw. There was something raw and dear about him, something that made her heart ache and flutter all at once, and she found herself wondering how she had ever thought she could keep pretending she didn’t notice.
“I—” she swallowed against the dryness in her throat. “No, I don’t think I do,” she answered, her voice barely louder than a whisper.
His lips twitched, and he gave the slightest motion of a nod. “Would you…want to do it again?”
She felt it—the flutter in her stomach, the rush of anticipation in her blood like a shot of starlight straight to her veins. She knew the answer before she had even heard the question.

“No, listen,” Hermione looked up at Pansy, at a loss. “It must be the wine, alright? Because I’m not—” Hermione sighed, gesturing vaguely between the two of them as her eyes darted anywhere but Pansy’s face.
“You’re not what?” Pansy prompted, her voice low. Almost threatening. She could still taste the remnant of Hermione on her lips, could still feel the warmth on her skin.
Hermione’s jaw clenched, and she shut her eyes. “I don’t like you like that.” Her voice was soft, timid, meek. At the sound of it, of the shame in her tone, Pansy almost wanted to cry.
Almost.
Pansy looked away, exhaling sharply. She crossed her arms over her chest, trying to ease the ache she felt. “Noted.”
