“Christ, Kevin, would you just calm down?” she said, exasperated. “I mean, God, do you have a crush on him or something?”
She did not expect Kevin to stare back at her, again, as if she were an idiot.
“What?” she demanded.
Kevin visibly hesitated. “They didn’t tell you?” he asked dubiously.
“Tell me what? That you’re a bloody psycho?”
Kevin stared at her some more. He flicked his gaze over her shoulder, to where she knew Andrew and Neil still were. When he looked at her again, a flush had begun to crawl up his neck. He cleared his throat. His lips parted on words that would not come.
She stared back at him. “Oh my god, have you actually got a crush on Andrew?”

‘Aren’t you tired of repeating yourself, Kevin? Or do you just like to listen to yourself speak so much?’ Andrew interrupted the dark haired man who was standing in a safe distance leaning against the wall looking through a pile of files. A shame. “Have you considered the possibility that Neil has chosen you, but believes you have not chosen him?” Renee says. "Have you ever explicitly told him what you want?”
“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.

Нил иногда задумывался, что было бы, если бы он мог пожить хоть немного как самый обычный подросток, не думая с утра, удастся ли дожить до вечера, не встретятся ли в очередном городе люди отца, не испытывая боли от ран и постоянной тревоги, с которой как будто уже породнился. Как сложилась бы его жизнь, если бы прошлое не было таким? Но мать быстро возвращала его на землю отрезвляющим подзатыльником. Нилу нельзя было менять прошлое. Это было строго запрещено.
