Every man in the antechamber froze, the silence thick and breathless. No one so much as moved as they all stared at the threshold, where the door stood ajar only a fraction, blocking them from view.

Summary
While Arthur painstakingly repeals the ban on magic, he lashes out at Merlin. The warlock, meanwhile, just found out his mother wants to move to Camelot, and asks for a raise. Refusing to hear him out, Arthur snaps, and accuses Merlin of spending all his money at the tavern. So Merlin decides to finally go.

“So what was your plan then? Seduce me? Manipulate me with your disgusting magic? Kill my father and then get yourself some… insurance in case I found out?” Arthur spat the word like it was filth incarnate. “How long have you known you were pregnant?”
When a desperate Arthur tells Merlin he’s willing to use magic to save his dying father, Merlin doesn’t hesitate. Unbeknownst to either of them, someone has already taken steps to ensure that Uther dies. When Merlin’s magic fails, any hope of Arthur embracing his gift dies with Uther.
Arthur abandons Merlin despite his pregnancy, and leaves him to rot in one of Camelot’s many towers. But even locked in a cage, Merlin faces constant danger and must find a way to escape his fate.

“What, who do you think you are? The King?” Merlin asked incredulously when the alpha said he would throw him in jail - how cocky was this guy? His hopes of making it work were crumbling by the second.
“No, I’m his son. Arthur.”
Of fucking course. Because of course the best alpha Merlin had ever smelled would not only be a total prat, but would throw him on the pyre himself if he knew Merlin had magic, omega or not.

Or: Merlin is an omega who pretends to be a beta to remain close to Arthur. If only he wasn't in love with the prat, it would be much easier to bear.

Summary
When Arthur nearly dies by Lady Helen's dagger, Merlin uses magic to heal him. Unwilling to see Merlin executed for saving his life, Arthur turns a blind eye—but only under the condition that Merlin take on the role of his servant. What starts as "keeping his enemy closer" soon turns into completely redefining who his enemy is, as Merlin helps Arthur to unlearn his father's hatred. What then becomes camaraderie soon blossoms into much, much more.
