Summary
To peacefully end the war with Akielos, King Auguste of Vere sold his brother in marriage. To some, that was his first mistake.
As Laurent thrived in Akielos, his brother's rule suffered without him. Now the King of Vere has taken a prolonged Retreat from his duties, leaving the country in the hands of his chosen Regent, his uncle, Richard. In the south, Akielos is at war with her own people, a simple rebellion that should have been quashed in months stretching into years, as if their enemies somehow know their every move before they make it.

Summary
At the battle of Marlas, Auguste brokered peace by promising his brother to Akielos. That was his first mistake.
Auguste is a failure of a King. His brother hates him, his wife is dying, and his guards are turning against him. The only person still on his side is his uncle, Richard of Vere, and Uncle Richard is still recovering from a vicious assassination attempt. Every move Auguste makes seems to be the wrong one. Every time he is sure he is right, the rift between himself and Laurent only stretches farther.
One thing Auguste is sure of: whatever the price, no one will take his brother from him.

Summary
"You sold me to Akielos."
The battle of Marlas comes to an end fizzling on uncertain terms when the victory Auguste earned fails to prove as decisive as he'd first thought. With his father dead and the crown unexpectedly placed upon his brow, sacrifices must be made for the greater good. Auguste cannot establish his rule and continue this pointless war at the same time - not without a high price in bodies and time and gold. Peace must be established, quickly, and it has to be the kind that lasts. Laurent will understand. Sometimes, duty and honor must take precedence over personal preference.

Summary
“Perhaps I should have you beg me to burn you, doctor. You always force me to ask for it.”
Dottore snorts. “The difference between you and me is that you are a desperate, needy pain slut and I am… I’m going to—a-ah!”
“Going to what?” Pantalone laughs, voice high and sweet as he dribbles hot wax below the sharp jut of a collarbone. “What do you plan to do, darling? You’re all tied up.”
Il Dottore’s in one of his tempers. Pantalone is unmoved. Over candlelit tea, one thing leads to another.
