When Leonardo meets Casey Jones, all he can tell is that she clearly knows something about ninjutsu, and he's never seen that in New York before. When Casey Jones meets Leonardo, all she can tell is that he's like nothing she's ever seen, and could be her first chance at a real friend in a long time. They have no way of knowing that they're on opposite sides of the war they've spent their entire lives preparing to fight. Not at first.

Summary
Four teenaged brothers had been living underneath the surface for the last 13 years of their lives, after being mutated into turtles by their father’s greatest foe. Under Splinter, they’d be taught the art of ninjitsu, as he pushed them to be what he believed to be their greatest selves, sometimes much beyond their abilities.
He’d remind them often what they were, and how humans treat ‘freaks’ such as themselves. The only thing humans wish to destroy more than anything beautiful, is something hideous. He’d recite stories of his own, of how humans would mistreat him upon this wretched transformation. It wasn’t just crude remarks, no-- it was hostile attacks, vicious assault, unadulterated enmity all because of this body he could not control-- and that terrified the young boys.
Leonardo would question often just how exaggerated these stories were— having once been human himself— but quiet he remained, privy to the necessary balance between fact and fiction needed to maintain their simple life.
The other three are forced out of their shells when one of them flees to the surface in search of answers.
Resentment drove their foes to near madness, and what could be stronger than that?
