    Vash isn’t sure what dries out his throat faster; the fact that Meryl’s completely unfazed by this, or the curse, which—does something to him, maybe because she really doesn’t cuss that often, maybe just because the image of her now and the very matter-of-fact tone are—somewhat at odds with each other? But now. How else would Meryl wear a maid dress? Why should Vash even bother being surprised?

    He can feel his own heart beat. Never a good thing. Means he’s either on the brink of an anxiety attack, or worse, about to say something stupid. Another bite on the tip of his tongue doesn’t make Vash feel any better about his prospects here, and he struggles to his feet, cramming his hands into the pockets of Marlon’s jacket and ignoring the lint that digs into his knuckles. It is actually the least of his concerns right now.

    “Wow,” says Vash, and when Meryl raises an eyebrow at him, he clears his throat and continues, “I, uh, lucky they had something in your size, huh?”

    “No kidding.” Meryl adjusts the skirt with a mild frown.

    Meryl has to dress up as a maid to get an undercover scoop. Vash is a lot more bothered by this than she is.
