Summary
The lights are bright and a pure, dazzling white; Jackie’s voice drips honey; the beat thumps on, light drum hits and hi-hats; her midriff is smooth and visible above the belt loops of her low-waisted blue jeans; the young girls in the crowd squeal as she sways innocently in front of them; and Shauna is one bass strum away from snapping.
But in Nat’s darkened pupils, recognition lingers, long, defiant and impossibly persistent:

“She was talking about a summer of boys,” Lottie says, still not looking at her. It isn’t accusatory. Just observational.
Shauna’s stomach tightens again, sharper this time. “She talks about boys a lot.”
Lottie’s pen stops. She finally looks over, her expression unreadable but intent, like she’s cataloging something for later.
“And you?” she asks.
The question lands heavier than it should. Shauna swallows. She shrugs, the movement stiff. “I don’t know.”
It’s the most honest answer she has.
For a second, Lottie studies her like she might say something else, like she’s standing on the edge of it. Then she looks back down at her notebook.
“You don’t have to,” she says. “Know yet.”
Shauna doesn’t respond. She’s not sure how.or
It’s the end of junior year at high school, and Shauna Shipman, along with her teammates, is heading into summer. Lottie Matthews, a wealthy, skilled, and quietly magnetic teammate, invites a select group of girls—Shauna, Jackie, Natalie, Taissa, and Van—to spend a week at her family’s private East Coast island.
