Andrew and Neil’s absence from the court for most of season had resulted in a necessary reliance on their chaotic and, frankly, unprepared freshmen, and not even an unbelievable last ditch effort in December from the team had been enough to overcome the growing powerhouses of exy in the SEC.
Kevin calls Jean that very same night.
Only in the aftermath can Jean pinpoint that this is the moment that catalyzes the steep spiral down.

Summary
The faith that Kevin was going to come back died when the Master had to round up the entire team, coaches and staff and all, and tell them that Kevin Day, number two, son of Exy, had disappeared. There’s a point where the search parties stop looking for a person and start looking for a body. That was the point Jean stopped hoping for Kevin coming back and just started hoping he was alive.

If he’d asked, truly asked, I want to see you topped with please, Jean would have cursed him out and jumped on the first plane to South Carolina. And perhaps I guess you could come here is not a stern come to Palmetto that it could have been, but it is not good enough, it is not what Jean wants from him. In the end that’s what’s changed the most: Jean can want things now, not as much as his heart would like to, but just enough to expect something honest from Kevin.
Jean brushes his fingers over the ridiculous print of a beret on his brand new sheets and asks, "Is there even a difference in your vocabulary between those two?"
"Is there for you?" Kevin retorts.or, Jean Moreau agrees to visit Palmetto during winter break. It goes about as well as you might expect.

He wanted Tam to hold his hand and take him on dates to Jerry & Sons, he wanted to kiss Tam’s cheek after school every day and hug him when he was mad. He wanted all of that, because he wanted Tam.
And he was a coward because he couldn’t say it aloud.
