Katara stands at the cliff's edge, a dome of ice covering the entire ledge. It's similar to the water one she had made earlier, except it's larger. Much larger. He steps forward. The strange noise is louder out here and he realizes it's the sound of rain against the ice above.
Somehow, she knows he's there.
"I never knew I could do this, before," she says. "Not like this."
Famously, Zuko is at a loss for words.

Zuko can't believe this is happening. Surely the universe is testing him. He's been in love with Katara since he was a teenager. Now, she's shown up to his home, seeking a place to stay post-breakup. Were this a drama, Zuko would bring her to his favorite courtyard and say, Forget about the Avatar, marry me instead. And she'd agree and fall into his arms and he'd kiss her senseless and finally learn the taste of her mouth. They'd have beautiful, blue-eyed children that Zuko would never be an asshole to, and live happily ever after.
However, that would probably cause a diplomatic incident. Also, he doubts she returns his feelings.
So there's that.

With the span of a whole ocean lying between them, politics holding them apart and reformation efforts testing their patience, Katara and Zuko do their very best to keep in touch. After all— how do you hold onto someone where the currents cannot reach?

After holding her best friend's life in her hands and watching it nearly slip through her fingers, Katara finds herself glued to Zuko's side, and cares for him diligently in the days following the Agni Kai, waiting to hear word on the fate of their friends in the Earth Kingdom and what has become of the Fire Lord.
Meanwhile Aang, Sokka, Suki, and Toph deal with the immediate aftermath of the Fire Lord's death and wait to hear word of Katara and Zuko from the Fire Nation.
Upon reunion, tensions that have been building for months following the group's arrival on Ember Island come to a boiling point, abruptly threatening to tear Team Avatar apart following the end of the Hundred Year War as Katara's motherly love towards Aang clashes with her and Zuko's newly budding love for each other, and Aang's unhealthy obsession with Katara has him on the verge of burning bridges he can't rebuild.
