She strains and fails to keep her voice even, hears it warble and crack as her eyes begin to well. “I’m… I’m fucked up, Lux. And not in a fun, quirky ‘pineapple on pizza’ way, I’m just… so fucking bad, and I can’t stop. And I’m gonna keep fucking up in the exact same ways over and over again until I’m dead, and I’m too much of a fucking pussy to just get it over with.”

She’s still trapped; in the confines of the miniscule comfort zone she’s made for herself, in her own festering brain, and she’s decided that’s okay.She’s already survived longer than anyone would’ve expected. It’s only when her paths cross with Lux that she sets herself to the much harder task of trying to live.

“Hi there!” the blonde stranger said, casually leaning against the empty counter. Her voice was bright and cheerful, easily carrying over the thumping of the current song. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Uh,” her body tensed, “sure?”
The woman took a step back and posed. “Is this too much red? At home, I thought I nailed this outfit, but now that I’m here, I’m second-guessing. I kinda feel like a Twizzler.”
“You’re joking, right?”
Shining eyes turned worried as soon as she said that, and Jinx’s stomach caught fire. “I-I mean, you’re like, the best looking person here.” She flailed her arms, like that would somehow get her point across. “No competition. I honestly thought you were a model or something. You look… very nice.”
The fuck was that? Jinx stared blankly at the blonde, who was just as taken aback by the words now lingering in the stale air. Heat rose, covering her face in a flush. She quickly looked away, grabbing her drink with a shaky hand. This couldn’t have gone worse.
