Summary
Halloween was always an exhilarating event for Racetrack Higgins. He went all-in for it, getting done up in a full ensemble with accessories and make up every year. In the past, he’d gone for something scary or topical, but this year was different. He had grown into himself more, was more physically confident than he’d been in previous years, plus he had a hot boyfriend to tease relentlessly.
This is to say, it was the sluttiest day of the year for boys like Race, and he spared no effort or expense.
OR
Spot doesn't get the appeal of Halloween until Race makes him.

It was well past curfew when Romeo limped back to the lodging house, left arm clutched tightly at his side. All the lights were off, as he expected, except for the downstairs bathroom. He expected that too, but he couldn't help the pit of dread settling in his stomach.
There's no way to get to bed without passing the downstairs bathroom, and it's occupant knows that. So Romeo takes a deep breath and squares his shoulders, ready to seal his fate.
