Summary
Herbert’s jaw is clenched in concentration as he works, and it is this very jaw that piques Daniel’s curiosity now, speckled with a dark stubble that doesn’t suit Herbert at all. It makes him appear tired, unkempt, and somehow much older. Granted, Herbert rarely looks conventionally put together with his wild eyes and bloodstained clothes, but that's a different kind of disarray, one of mad vigor and reckless youth. Not whatever this is, the pinnacle of human exhaustion.
“Herbert,” Daniel says firmly, not even registering the words as they leave his own lips. “You need to shave.”

"Oh?" Dan leaned against the doorframe. "And why might that be?"
"It's not relevant." Dan simply fixed him with a stern stare, and finally Herbert relented. "My parents asked me to come home. It's my brother's birthday, and for some reason they feel that I need to be there."
"Oh." That wasn't quite what Dan was expecting. He'd heard Herbert reference his family before, of course, but he never thought they were still in contact. Judging from the sour look on Herbert's face, he wished they weren't.

Rufus did tend to leave gifts of similar nature on Dan’s doorstep, and once, just once, on his pillow. Mercifully, Meg didn’t wake up to the sight back then. Dan can’t blame him, really. He needed to be praised, so proud of his accomplishments and so thoughtful, willing to share the prey with his helpless human who couldn’t catch anything.
Now West is demanding his attention, though, and there’s a similar pride in his movements as he opens the cupboard Dan didn’t think to open.
“Fuck,” is all Dan can say at first. Then, “Jesus. Fuck.”
