Oh, you have got to be kidding me.”

    Derek froze. “…What?”

The King’s voice dropped into something dangerously flat.

“I dragged a mind across eternity. I filled it with the collapse of stars, the birth of civilizations, the end of all things. I gave it knowledge so vast it shattered under the weight of it.” The eye flicked toward Derek. “And you—”

Derek straightened slightly, like he was bracing for something.

“—you used your final coherent thoughts to leave behind cryptic warnings… carefully designed pathways… intricate systems meant to guide the next subject…”

    A pause.

“…and instead of properly instilling fear, you accidentally set up a romantic narrative.”

    Avery choked. “A what—?”

Derek made a sound that could only be described as a system failure. “That’s not—what are you—no, that’s not what I—”

    Summary

The King is gone. Derek knows this. The King is gone and Derek is here and the life they have built is real and good and full of plants with Latin labels and forty-seven thousand subscribers and butterfly pasta on Wednesday nights.

The fault lines are also real.

It starts on a Monday with a book that mentions stars. By Friday Derek has spent a week navigating cracks in the wall between what he knows and what humans are supposed to know, and he is exhausted, and he has said none of this out loud, and Avery has noticed all of it and said nothing and simply stayed close in the particular Avery way of staying close that does not announce itself and does not demand anything and is somehow the most useful thing in the world.
On Friday afternoon Derek says: I think I need to talk to someone professional about this.

Avery says: I know a really good therapist.
Derek says: of course you do.
Avery says: I looked her up three weeks ago. Just in case.

That is, somehow, the most romantic thing anyone has ever said to Derek Hutchins.

    Summary

The first video they film together goes like this:
Avery forgets his intro four times because Derek keeps looking at him like that. Derek is completely, infuriatingly, unflappably calm in the way of someone who has stared into the face of eldritch horror and found a Minecraft camera comparatively manageable. They argue about biscuits on camera. Derek says this is nice in a tone of mild surprise and four seconds of footage gets clipped forty thousand times.

Avery wakes up the next morning to a subscriber count that has done something vertical. Derek is already reading the comments. He is being smug about this. He is calling it pleased. These are the same thing.

(a fic about filming, the mark on the wall, grain direction, and the particular joy of introducing someone you love to forty-seven thousand strangers who were always going to love them too.)

    Summary

Avery's pothos is dying. Derek knows this because Derek has retained, from eleven days of cosmic knowledge, a detailed and apparently permanent understanding of botany.

He repots the pothos. He audits the windowsill. He acquires perlite. He talks to the plants, all of them, individually, with the same calm focused attention he gives everything, and Avery watches from the doorway and decides he is completely normal about this.

He is not normal about this.

Also Derek and Hastur have an ongoing disagreement that has been running for several weeks and shows no signs of resolution, and Avery buys sunflower seeds, and they talk about balconies in the careful sideways way they talk about most things, and a seedling comes up one day late and Derek crouches down to be level with it and says hi, you're late, but you're here, and Avery is so fine he has never been less fine in his life.

    Summary

Three weeks into their shared Minecraft world, Derek builds Avery a library.
It has a pitched roof and reading nooks and lanterns placed at exactly the right height and a sign above the fireplace that says for Avery, so we have somewhere to put things we want to keep.

Avery tries to tell Derek it's beautiful. Derek says it's just a Minecraft building. Avery says it's beautiful again. Derek says the farm was already finished so he had time. Avery says it's beautiful a third time and waits.
Derek says thank you. It comes out right this time.

Later Avery falls asleep against Derek's chest on the couch and Derek pulls the redistributed blanket over both of them and thinks about the sign and decides that this, the lamp, the apartment, the ordinary Thursday night weight of someone he loves asleep against him, is also something he wants to keep.

(a fic about grain direction, reading nooks, and learning to let good things be said about you.)
