Summary
When Kaneki ran into the ghoul investigator who he'd fought in the rain, he hadn't expected to form a friendship with him. Despite the danger and hopelessness of convincing a man who'd made it his life's mission to eradicate ghouls, Kaneki couldn't help but enjoy Amon's company. He didn't deserve it and Amon would only see their friendship as a betrayal when he'd inevitably find out, but he still found himself looking forward to the mornings when Amon would chat with him while he'd make him a coffee.
Amon had never formed any sort of relationship outside of the CCG. His life revolved around ghouls, but when he met Kaneki, he found himself opening up. He didn't even particularly enjoy coffee, but it didn't take long for him to become a regular at the cafe Kaneki worked at. Something about Kaneki was more interesting than any ghoul, and while Amon couldn't put a name to the feeling, what he did know was that he couldn't get enough of Kaneki.
Unfortunately though, secrets never remained hidden for long.

Deep and old and slow.” Lewis takes a shaky breath. “I laughed and asked if he was talking about George… but he didn’t laugh. He told me that when he was gone, he would send something to protect it. Protect us. Never said what, or what from. I thought he just meant he’d be praying for us.” He laughs hoarsely. “But I never saw him at church…”
“Grandad,” you say gently, carefully, “what does this have to do with the new farmer?”

“Stress relief. Figured I was owed some.” Her lips twitch a little as she raises the bottle to toast him.
He lets out a long breath through his nose. He doesn’t need to breathe—she knows because she’s watched to see if his chest ever rises and falls. It never does. He’s making that sound just to let her know she’s being exasperating. Or perhaps it’s muscle memory locked in what remains of the original Sam Wayne’s body. Hard to say. She doubts he’d answer outright and non-cryptically if she asked.
She smiles, still holding the bottle aloft. “Come and take it from me, then.”
