Badeni couldn't believe it. It wasn't the fact that Oczy had bought him a pizza, or even the fact that he had so rudely walked past him in the middle of a conversation– no. It was the comment he made.
“Think of it as repayment for all the wonderful meals you’ve made for me.”
It's been over a month since Oczy and Badeni have decided to share an apartment together, and Badeni's been about as inviting as a cactus. Undeterred by this, Oczy is determined to try to understand his roommate, and even perhaps call him a 'friend' one day. So one afternoon, Oczy decides to try and do something nice for him.

Summary
A man’s fingernails would grow back if prised off; his spirit, if plucked out and broken in the same way, would not. Oczy did not cast judgement upon Badeni for the measures he took. Yet despite his uncanny ability to chart the man’s subtleties, he’d failed to realize what lay plainly before his eyes.
Oczy survives his duel with Nowak, but finds his faith shaken.
