A loud, high-pitched scream echoes through the halls of the manor and Belly’s blood runs cold.
The gentle clinking of cutlery on china comes to a sudden halt. Nobody dares utter a word as their eyes flick to one another, a silent question filling the room. The sound of footsteps thundering down the stairs penetrates the silence as the young maid comes rushing into the dining room, deathly pale and brown-eyes deranged from fear.
“Dead…murdered…” she chokes out before collapsing in a heap on the hardwood floor.

Belly’s so proud of him, she could scream. She’s crying as Saka claps Conrad on the back and William Saliba lifts him off his feet, pulling him over to the huddle of sweaty, euphoric men celebrating by the corner flag. Conrad’s smiling a real smile, with teeth, and she thinks that maybe she hasn’t seen him look so happy since Susannah got sick.
Belly picks up her phone. She never deleted her text history with Conrad, and the last message he’d sent was asking her to pick up ice from the gas station. Her fingers are shaking as she tries for something breezy.
I know you probably don’t—

Belly puts her phone back down. The last time Conrad had spoken to her was over a year ago in Cousins when he’d told her he’d never not love her and she told him to get out.
Congrats on your debut would be nice, but she’s forfeited the right to say anything at all.
