Summary
“How long do humans live for, question. Rocky want to know.”
Rocky stamps his claw impatiently on the flat surface of his xenonite ball as he asks, a skittery, jittery movement that rattles in Ryland’s ears.
He sighs. Rubs at his temples. Thinks about how to answer this as diplomatically as physically possible, as at ease as physically possible.
It’s not that he cares much about the fact he’ll be dead long long before Rocky. He doesn’t care about that. He’s probably going to die a whole lot sooner than your average human, anyway, considering his diet of coma-slurry and Taumoeba and little else. Besides, he’s been in space for longer than anybody has been in the history of ever. That’s sure to do messed-up things to his bones and joints and mass and everything. But it doesn’t matter. He’s made peace with that. For-real made peace, because any time more is a thousand times over what he thought he’d get.
What does matter is that Rocky has no idea that there’s probably only about fifty years left in his tank.

Or: the average male human lifespan is 80 years. Rocky doesn't know that.

Summary
I can’t go home yet; I don’t want to face Adrian’s gentle comfort; I don’t deserve it. I can’t do anything useful anymore. I did my job and saved the planet, and I guess that’s it. No more engineering for Rocky. Maybe I’ll pick up something else, a new career to fill my time if no one will utilize my painstakingly crafted talents in the engineering world anymore. No, I can’t even pretend. I love engineering, I love making things, working on things, making things better. I need a project to fill up my thoughts until nothing else fits. Why won’t they give me one?
Grace would give me one. He loves my inventions, praises me more than I can stand to hear. He wants my work still, right? I’m already halfway to the dome before I even realize it. It’s late for Grace, he might not even be awake, but I need to meet him. I need him.
or Grace settles into Erid life pretty easily. Rocky struggles to do the same.

“Who complained about you eating, question?” Someone must’ve said something. He’s had so many visitors in the last couple of days. Who was it? Grace has never questioned this part of himself. Grace huffs at me.
“No one! I’m just trying to be polite! Eridians have special soundproof eating rooms, shouldn’t I?”
“You are not Eridian!”
He doesn’t need to meet our standards; he’s his own species! Some things he might need to change in his daily life to adapt to Erid life, but his food habits don’t need to be one of them. My words don’t comfort Grace like I thought they would. Grace shrinks into himself, and I wish I were on his side to hug him.
or the Entities provide Grace with a culture teacher to prepare for life on Erid and he gets his first taste of Eridian inhospitality.

“Hey! It’s a lot up here, okay? It’s a normal response to stress.” He rubs a hand over his face. “Okay, I cried a lot down there, too. But not in class! Not if I could help it. But having to say goodbye, gosh, I’ve never been good at that.” Grace laughs, but it sounds sad. His mouth is shut firmly, and he leans against my ball. He’s so soft, his body melds to the side of the xenonite with ease. “I can’t imagine what a mess I’ll be when—” he cuts himself off, but I know what was coming next.
I’m not sure how I’ll be when we say goodbye either. It didn’t seem like it’d matter so much at first, after all, if we part ways, it means we succeeded. I’d be going back to Erid, to Adrian, to home. But I’d be leaving behind Grace. The thought of that is unpleasant. It sinks deep in me; the emotion is painfully familiar. It’s been a long time since I’ve had anyone to mourn losing anyone again. I don’t want to think about it, I’m not ready.
