“You’re not my Denji. But that’s okay. I’m not yours either.”
“What are you—” Denji rasps, the words slicing his throat, like digging his palms into barbed wire or scraping his knees on a rose bush, picking letters like thorns out of his flesh for days. “What are you on about?
The dull canines in Yoshida’s mouth scrape against the sharp edges of Denji’s shoulder, the part of Denji that never filled out no matter how much weight he’d gained since he became a Devil Hunter. It’s a reminder— that Yoshida could suck as many bruises as he’d like into the empty canvas of Denji’s mortal being, or that Yoshida could tear out Denji’s jugular if he really tried. To choose kindness had always been a conscious choice for Denji, the same way Yoshida chooses to be gentle.
“Make me forget, Denji,” Yoshida exhales, shaky and punctuated by a breathless laugh.
Yoshida can run as far as he wants, but everything will always come back to Denji.
