“What’s next for us?” Misa asked. She touched his forearm, felt him flinch infinitesimally before he allowed her. He moved it away from the laptop keyboard and closer to her, so she could have her way with it. She held on to him uncertainly, running her thumb over his skin. Kira still didn’t feel like he belonged to her.
Light blinked half-lidded eyes at her, unsmiling. “Do you want to have a kid?”
——
After defeating L, Misa and Light get married and carry on their lives as Kira while Light works on his career. A little over a year into the marriage, Misa is unsatisfied and restless.

“I’ll take over the case,” Light said. “For as long as you can’t.”
“I think that’s a great idea,” L said. He sat in bed with his laptop in front of him, knees to his chest, and powered it on.
“Wait, really?”
“Yes of course, Light-kun.”
“You’re really going to hand off the most complicated case of your life to a college student?”
“Let’s see how you do.”
Light reached over and shut L’s laptop screen.
L looked up at him, baffled.
“It’s a deal. I’ll take over. But you still need to sleep.”

This is an exploration how it feels to be L after Kira finesses him with the memory loss plan - the depression, the confusion, the temptation to give up. Then it shows the same situation from Light’s perspective. It also explores the question of how Light might reinterpret the events of the early Kira investigation after losing his memory of being Kira. How might he think about the cafe conversation with L and his early consultations on the case if he didn’t remember he was Kira at the time? -
