    Summary

“She said she wasn’t worried about us breaking up.”

Oh. Well. That was pretty definitively a thing that people said about partners who were together romantically.

    “Say something,” Buck instructed.

    “What?”

“Anything,” Buck said, his voice wavering on the word. Which was—it was weird, right? Why was Buck so shaken by a throwaway comment?

Or maybe the better question was why wasn’t Eddie? If either of them was going to get freaked out by the assumption that he was dating a man, it would make more sense for it to be Eddie, who was straight, and not Buck, who had, in fact, already dated men.

“Aren’t you going to be late for your shift?”

    -----

Buck and Eddie get shaken up by a comment from Theo’s social worker, and then by a magnitude 7 earthquake; it turns out, some disasters are better than others.

    Summary

“I can’t sleep,” Spooky Doorway Eddie says. “Can we just keep fighting tomorrow?”

The annoyance drops from a boil to a simmer. He reaches for the covers, holding up a corner in an invitation for a temporary truce. “I’m still mad at you.”

“I know,” Eddie offers, crossing the room and slipping beneath the sheets. “I’m mad at you, too.”

Or, a first fight and a truce.

“Oh my god, did you want to help me beat that stupid record?”

No. Yes. Of course Eddie never cared about that stupid record he just— He just—

“It is!” Buck exclaims gleefully, his voice a little loud for the hour and the number of patrons in the bar, that is, not many. “You were going to bid on me?”

Eddie buries his face in his hands, taking a deep breath. At least this is all fun for Buck. Just fun. Nothing else. Because, of course, Buck—

“You’re such a good friend.” First gunshot. “But I really didn’t need that.” Second gunshot. “But if you had, we wouldn’t have had to go on a date, you know.” And there it is, and Eddie is lying dying on the floor, not for the first time, probably not for the last.

Or: Post auction, Buck is concerned about how much Eddie spent, and Eddie has to confess he wanted to buy a lot more.

Buck frowns slightly, huffs, “No, I mean it, Eddie. You—Really, you can’t be gay.” he seems to think, pauses, ”Or, you know what, I can’t. I can’t be bisexual, then. I’m straight from now on,” he declares, nodding to himself.

“You’re not straight, dumbass,” Eddie says, rolling his eyes.

Buck points a finger at him, “Don’t invalidate me.”

(Or, Eddie tries to come out to Buck, and to confess his love in the process. It could’ve gone worse, he thinks.)

    Summary

    “Chim. Weird question?”

Chimney’s chair creaks. Buck cranes his head over the back of the couch and watches him straighten up, pop his back, close the folder.

“You only ever ask me weird questions,” he says, and then crosses the loft to sit in one of the armchairs. He levels Buck with a look that’s way too knowing for the amount of words they’ve exchanged. “What’s up?”

    He takes a breath.

“What does it feel like to be a dad?”

in which buck is used to wanting things he's not allowed to have; it's just that he never thought being a father would be one of them.
