    You didn’t expect me to be someone you cared about. Damian finishes the thought for him, teeth gritting behind his closed lips. His skin is prickling with the pressure of being seen, recognized. It’s not what he wanted. It’s not what he asked for. And yet—when Grayson’s hand brushes his elbow again, steadying him gently as they walk down the fire escape, Damian doesn’t pull away. His instincts are screaming at him to shake the touch off. That’s just sympathy. Just pity.

    It doesn’t mean anything.

    He is just a civilian, Damian reminds himself harshly, over and over like a mantra. He does not matter. His affection does not matter. But the words lose their sharpness the longer Grayson looks at him like that—like Damian is someone, not something broken or dangerous. Not just another shadow in the night.

    Damian al Ghul is sent to Gotham with a mission: earn the right to stand beside the Batman. He will not grovel for a place at his father's side like some desperate orphan—he will prove he belongs there.     Talia raised her hand to his shoulders, her smile manic. “Meet your son,” her voice dripping with pride, the same way that Tim would talk about an invention of his, “Damian.”

    Bruce’s stomach tied itself in knots, the whites of his domino masks turning to slits. Bruce almost wanted to reach forward to touch the boy to see if he was real; the only indicator would be the minute rise and fall of his small chest and the twin-daggers of his emerald eyes.

    This was no child. This was a weapon. Perfectly sharpened.

    “He is everything the League has ever hoped to create. He will listen to any command without hesitation. There is no threat he cannot kill, no task he will fail." Her eyes flicked to Bruce, the malice there unmistakable. "And if he does, well... there are contingencies in place. He is…the perfect soldier.”

    Bruce fought back a roll of nausea.

    "I kill so others don't have to," Bruce states firmly and clearly. This entire situation didn't seem like it could get any more bizarre, what with Bruce sitting in the dark and polishing guns, but somehow it just has, "While you are here you will not kill."

    Jason's throat is scratchy and dry with terror, but the insatiable feeling of being talked over and disregarded is a fresh wound. He can't back down from this if he tried, "I've killed. I still kill. Who the fuck do you think you are to stop me?"

    Bruce gently sets down his gun, and picks up the blade beside him with practised ease. Jason's blood runs cold when the man wearing his father's face says, "You will die by my hand if you try."

    (Jason meets a version of Bruce who has manifested his fears very differently.)

    His life was not pleasant, but Jason was nothing if not a fighter, and dammit if was he going to let the hell around him kill who he was as a person. Or his dreams of growing up and going to college.

    Those dreams suddenly came a little more into focus, when his idiot of a pimp accidentally tried to rent him to Bruce Wayne. Poor bastard could have never guessed he was the Batman himself. Heck, not even Jason figured that out, at first. And Batman had practically adopted him.
