Summary
Dennis Whitaker has always been good at not-thinking about things. The way Robby says Abbot's name. The current in a room when both of them are in it. The fact that he has, apparently, developed feelings for not one but two attendings, which is a disaster by any reasonable metric.
Then Abbot comes back from three weeks away, finds Dennis alone in the break room at three in the morning, and answers the question Dennis didn't mean to ask out loud.

“M’not a fucking kid!” Dennis spits.“Stop fucking calling me that.”
On the offensive, and unable to stop, Robby bites back: “Then stop fucking acting like one!”
Dennis slumps back into his chair, seceding silently, eyes glossing. Robby pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration.
“Jesus, I— Forget it. I can’t talk to you when you’re like this.” Robby tells him, pulling his jacket from the back of his chair. “Go home, delete our chat history. This never happened. Don’t ever tell a soul about this.”
Dennis laughs mirthlessly.
Robby is not amused. He zips up his jacket and leans down a little closer to the boy.
“I’m not fucking around, Whitaker. This stays between us. You need to take this to your grave.”

Amidst a long Fourth of July shift, Dennis Whitaker has to break the news to Amy Miller that he isn’t, in fact, her boyfriend. Nor does he want to be. When he gets left without a ride at the end of his shift, he asks Robby to take him back to his place so he can show him how to arm and disarm the alarm system so he’s prepared for his shiny new house sitting gig. Robby’s not himself and Whitaker can tell. If only he could convince him somehow to wait until tomorrow to leave for his sabbatical.
