Summary
The Cloud Recesses Guest Lectures were held every three years for disciples between the ages of fifteen and eighteen. They had three purposes.
The first (and the reason it was hosted by the Lan) was to provide a shared baseline understanding of the core cultivation topics that underpinned every sect while not divulging clan-specific approaches.
The second was to create opportunities for friendships and alliances that would reduce the chance of war between the clans.
The third, and most important, was for the clans to replenish their bloodline by finding compatible mates with strong cultivation skills. In the last month of the lectures, challenges to test compatibility could be issued.
Wei Wuxian challenges Lan Wangji, sure that they are compatible mates. The Lan refuse to allow the Challenge.
They come to regret it.

Summary

Summary
Wei Ying does not quite die after the siege of the Burial Mounds. Instead he is reborn as something new, and the world is better for it.

There's a village at the foot of his mountain. Different people live there, but mostly farmers, small merchants and the like. He learns all that from the chatter at the edge of his awareness. Excitable kids doing dares, egging each other on — who can come further up the scary mountain. He can admire the spirit, chuckling to himself, eager to monitor this mischievousness. Something pangs in his heart at this, memories threatening to swarm, but like always, they never come. The hollowness in his mind persists.
