It wasn’t that Gil necessarily wanted to travel Auradon without Harry and Uma, it was just that he hadn’t tested well enough to get into Auradon Prep. So he hit the road with Jay while trying to catch up on his schooling, except King Ben also wanted them to be ambassadors?
It was a lot, and Gil didn’t like being separated from his crew, but at least this new version of Jay was nice, and so were the rest of his friends for some reason. But hey, that was just Auradon, right? Obviously. There was no need to look into the non-stop video chats and surprise visits and overwhelming support when their adventures took an unexpected turn. That was just basic good-guy stuff. It was all fine.

Summary
When Evie wakes Doug with true love’s kiss, Chad figured that was it. He’d missed his shot with Doug, and maybe that was for the best, considering the fact that his own kingdom still tried to kill him (and by extension, everyone he loved) on a regular basis. Chad had resigned himself to some justified moping, which was of course when Audrey swept in with a plan of her own like the tactical genius that she was.
Because apparently Doug wasn’t just with Evie, he was with a whole mess of people, and if Chad wanted to worm his way into things, there was the simple matter of taking advantage of the lingering crush Jay apparently had on him. Get in with the Agraben, and he could get in with the others. Get in with Doug.
Cue Chad and Audrey crashing Jay and Gil’s adventure around the world – doing charitable work in place of her house arrest while the other two explored, and if they did a little tactical wooing while they were at it – well, that was all part of the bigger game, wasn’t it?

Summary
Perhaps Chad’s problem-solving methods tended to lean on the side of overdramatic, but there were some things in life that couldn’t be whisked away by the magic of a happily ever after. Sometimes things just went wrong, and Chad had always been the pragmatic sort. He could see the warning signs accumulating into something that couldn’t be managed, and he reacted appropriately.
Maybe, just maybe, resorting to time travel to erase your soon-to-be failure of a relationship wasn’t the most rational thing to do, but Chad was at the end of his rope. The plan was simple: return to the first day of the masquerade that had started it all and avoid his lovers, thus derailing the events that would lead to the culmination of his relationship. It was straightforward. It was ludicrous.
Somehow, he managed to mess it up anyway.
