Summary
It's the summer of 1983 when Tighnari is sent to the middle of nowhere on a research project that was doomed from the very beginning. After all, he was sent to do field research on a small mountain town with the only source of public transport being the local friendly sheriff, Cyno, and his rustbucket pickup truck.
Or, maybe he has a special interest in Tighnari. But that couldn't be it, right?

I really like the setting and the ambience. I don't even know how to go abt this, coz the story in it of itself isn't bad. It's just ok. The beginning felt slow, even though time passed fast. They didn't really delve into cynari's relationship much, which hinders the credibility down the line. I like what they did with Layla. She was a refreshing character. Faruzan was an interesting character, but they gave her too much "power" (I'll explain more later). The first part should've been longer, to let the relationship settle. But, on the other hand, that part was super boring. I could barely get through it. Also, idk if they changed the writing style or if I got used to it, coz the beginning was so hard to read.
So, Collei... she was fine, I feel like her characterization made sense most of the time, being tortured and all. I liked how Cyno and Tighnari reacted to her trauma and how patient they were with her. Obviously, loved the way they were like her parents, and eventually became her parents. However, since cynari's relationship was severely undercooked, it felt undeserved. I hated the part where she got kidnapped and then saved, coz she shouldn't trust cynari again. They literally gave her away to her abusers, even though she was crying and begging to stay.
I also hated the raid of the mines, coz the FBI should've shown up. I don't think Cyno would put most of the village in danger to try to save the people in the cult. Also, with a half-baked plan. The author should have had the FBI show up and take Cyno with them to the raid so he could show them around, and had Collei and Tighnari worry in Baizhu's house. I hate with a burning passion that Faruzan "coerced" Cyno into being a part of the raid team, coz again, even if she's old and knows how to use a shotgun, Cyno should not be putting her in danger. She's a civilian after all, and Cyno is the sheriff; he should have the utmost authority. At the end of the raid, they didn't even save all of the devotees; they just saved some of the children. I would say it wasn't a success. for fucks sake, Faruzan literally died. How are they going to report that to the state police? like a violent cult with torturous tendencies, kidnapping children. It's not something you could just hide under the rug.
SCARA IS THE PUPPETEER. That shit made no freaking sense. He's literally the balladeer; there's another character that the puppeteer. Why make him? i dont get it- you could've just called him balladeer or have the puppeteer be himself. Also, i dont think that Scara would literally kidnap people to worship him (actually, maybe he would. yk the beginning of the sumeru AQ)
