One hand loose on the steering wheel, the other resting on the gearshift, fingers relaxed. “I imagine you’re frightened. It’s understandable.”

If Scar listens carefully, he can almost hear the other's teeth grind together in a painful creak - Grian had always tended to turn towards anger when he felt trapped, caged dog lashing out teeth first, and this time was no exception. "Why are you so calm about this?"
He shrugs. "I figured I'd wait until they return to check on the bloodbath… and then I'd kill them."
"And if they’re stronger than you?"
Scar lifts an eyebrow, in the exact way he knows will get under Grian's skin. "Well then I'll be dead, and I won't have to worry about it."
"You are so-" Grian's first words get swallowed, and then spat back a little differently. "insufferable!"
The worn elastic of his patience snaps under the dual weight of hunger and frustration, combining into a hot venomous blade of words. "And you're the coward who left his partner of two years behind without giving a single reason why, but you don't see me yelling about it."

Summary
It's 1988. Grian and Mumbo are roommates living in the US. Mumbo leaves on a solo camping trip at Grian's suggestion to get away from his job for a while. But when he fails to check in at the end of his trip, Grian is forced to report him as a missing person. And now the clock is ticking.
It's 1989. Grian takes a job in Shoshone National Forest as a fire lookout, prepared to spend the summer alone in the wilderness. But his primary goal isn't finding forest fires: it's finding Mumbo, who went missing in this location a year ago, alive and well. He expects to be alone. What Grian doesn't expect is having the company of the other nearby lookout, a man named Scar. Their relationship grows through their conversations held via two-way radio, as Grian begins to let Scar into the truth about why he's really here and mystery he's unraveling.

Summary
Hermit’s Hollow was a quiet town where you learned to ignore whisperings of nonsense and the dull, persistent feeling of being watched before you learned to ride a bike. To call it pedestrian would be a great disservice to all the terrible oddities occupying it— folks and legends alike.
Not that Grian believed any of them, of course.
Or; There's something wrong in Hermit's Hollow. There's something wrong with Grian. Neither of these are a surprise to him.
