A lolling tongue darted over the stranger’s elongated fangs, the razor canines extending past its lips. It squeezed his arm, turning Shadow’s deep grumble into a sharp, indignant growl. His body tensed, Chaos energy trailing up his limbs in preparation for its utilization.
Twisting his neck further to voice his vitriolic ire, Shadow met its gaze out of the corner of his eye and stilled at the sight.

As the duo departed the city limits and entered the bordering grassy hills between Station Square and the coastal seaside, the air started to clear. Shadow caught his first glimpse of the evening’s stars, an expanse of twinkling lights speckling the velvety sable horizon.
The clouds had almost completely dispersed, revealing the waxing gibbous moon. It illuminated the terrain with a hazy, surreal quality.
As they crested the hill, Shadow’s gaze briefly scanned the meadow below before settling on roguish green eyes. He froze. A familiar, knowing smirk greeted him.
"Hey, Shads!"

Summary
Naval Officer Sonic the Hedgehog was trained to command the sea, not to be captured by it. When a mission to recover the Chaos Emerald goes wrong, he finds himself captured aboard The Maria, a pirate ship commanded by the infuriatingly composed Captain Shadow. Stripped of his rank and thrown into pirate life, Sonic is forced to scrub decks and wear their uniform.
The emerald he's been tasked to find is still out there, and Sonic quickly realizes something far more unsettling: Shadow wants it too. As the hunt tightens and enemies close in, Sonic is forced to work alongside the very captain who captured him. And the longer Sonic remains along the Maria, the harder it becomes to tell where duty ends and something far more dangerous begins. Because some forces aren't meant to outrun. And some captains are impossible to ignore.

“Ya think y’all could point me in the direction o’ the nearest saloon? Xany and I went a bit topsy-turvey and well,” the hedgehog chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck with a free hand, “I plum just don't know where we landed.”

Shadow staggered to his feet; Sonic caught him at the shoulder before he fell over. “Hey,” Sonic murmured, “I meant it, you know. About being your friend.”
“I meant it too. You don’t know what you’re asking for.”
A different message than just a straight no, Shadow realized too late. He observed the sharp perk of Sonic’s ears while the grip that shifted to his bicep gave a squeeze. “Tell me. Tell me what I’m not getting.” A cough had Sonic wipe his mouth with the back of his glove. “I want to learn what it takes to be your friend.”

It started with the chao. Then, strange energy signatures. It was easy work; the everyday run-of-the-mill adventure leading him to an island called the Verdant Maw. Sonic’s friends would make space for him, always- but when he isn’t around, they’re still living their lives without him. He’s starting to feel the impact.
At least he can count on Shadow to stay the same.
The pair of hedgehogs work together to solve a new threat, learn just how far family extended beyond the ARK, and ask what it means to be a friend.
