A shaking lavender hand placed two leather mitts on the corner of the table. Their presence had Caleb rapidly reevaluating what he expected of the rest of his afternoon. The mitts were originally designed for boxing and the supple fingerless gloves braced against bulky pads were perfect for absorbing hits. They were also ideal for painlessly immobilizing a mage’s hands. Beau had not asked why he wanted them; she knew he had no interest in boxing.
Normally, Caleb was the one who feared his own power and desired it taken from him, just for a little while. Essek enjoyed control. Rarely, he liked it taken from him and kept safe, until he was ready to reclaim it.

He is scared that one day, you will not allow him to return to the Dynasty. You will forbid it, and keep him. It’s not an idle concern. You’ve thought about it, gamed through the logistics. He would rest and work at your command, like Astrid and Eadwulf, like your others. Your progress would be quicker, but there would be complications. He gives Astrid and Eadwulf a wide berth as he moves towards the door, as though he knows you have been contemplating springing the trap shut around him, as though the extra foot of distance might make a difference if you wished to make him stay.

He did not do much to conceal what he had done, only shifted the picnic table over the disturbed ground. Caleb raised an eyebrow when he returned. They were not so rich that he had not noticed a certain sum of diamonds missing; he could guess what had occurred.

It felt like she saw him everywhere after that, or perhaps it was just that whenever she saw him, she felt that old ache of guilt and so she noticed their every encounter all the more. They maintained a certain distance—a cordial nod, a brief hello—for most of the semester. Every time, she wondered if he remembered her. Was she supposed to acknowledge it first? Or perhaps he hoped she wouldn’t, and they would simply move on; pretend that she hadn’t seen when Master Ikithon plucked certain students from their classes for special excursions—pretend she didn’t know what they became—what he made them into.

Summary
“Come here, kid.” One of Robby’s hands catches Dennis’s and lands against his sternum, trapping his arm against his chest, while the other stays in his hair, fingers winding into damp curls. Dennis’s attention is everywhere and panicked. He catches a flash of Perlah readying the needle and a desperate sound punches out of him.
“Nope, don’t look at that,” Robby says, using the hand in his hair to force his head back, angling his vision away from the commotion and up towards him. Dennis’s eyes lock onto his, pupils blown wide. “Look at me. Yep, good. I’m right here. You’re doing so good, honey. Just keep those eyes on me.”
The IV tourniquet snaps into place and panic flashes anew in Dennis’s face. ”Robby—”
“I know. It’s just Dana and Perlah. We’re just pushing some fluids, no more drugs. You’re safe.” Out of the corner of his eye, Robby can see Perlah speeding through what has to be the fastest IV placement of her career, Dana keeping her grip on Dennis’s hand to stop him from jerking away. Dana shoots him a glance of warning and Robby tightens his hold. “Okay, quick poke now. Still just us. Deep breath, Dennis. I've got you."
